5 Connais tes seuils
Note tes cibles sur un papier : 458, 453, 10, 10.
Exemple
Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will know how to read your score, convert it into a CLB level, and know how many points your French can earn in Canada.
Glossary
1 Two ways of marking
Listening and Reading give a score from 100 to 699. Writing and Speaking give a mark out of 20. These are two different scales.
Do not mix them. A “470” and a “12” cannot be compared: the first is a listening or reading score, the second a writing or speaking mark.

2 From result to level
Your result first becomes a CEFR level (A1 → C2), then a CLB for Canada. Each part has its own threshold.
It is this CLB that immigration reads. Your raw score mainly helps you place yourself during training.

3 The CLB 7 target
For many files, the target is CLB 7 (level B2). That means: Listening 458+, Reading 453+, Writing 10+/20, Speaking 10+/20.
Keep these four numbers close. They are your targets, part by part.

4 Each skill counts on its own
Careful: you must reach the target in each part, not on average. A weak skill can lower your overall CLB.
A 480 in listening does not make up for an 8 in writing. Work on all 4 skills, especially the weakest one.

5 Know your thresholds
Write your targets on paper: 458, 453, 10, 10. During training, compare your scores to these numbers. You know at once where you stand.
6 How many points in Canada
In Express Entry, your points are called the CRS. Your French can add a lot to it.
If you reach CLB 7 in all 4 parts and you also have good English (level CLB 5 or higher), French gives you 50 CRS points. If you have little English (CLB 4 or less) or no English at all, it still gives you 25 points. Your French is never wasted.
7 CLB 5 or CLB 7?
The level to aim for also depends on your job. To enter Express Entry, the minimum is CLB 5.
For highly skilled jobs (TEER 0 and 1 categories), CLB 7 is often required. For other jobs (TEER 2 and 3), CLB 5 may be enough. Check your job, then set your target.
Check your target in 4 steps
Aiming for the average, or aiming for each part
“I have 480 in listening, it makes up for my 8 in writing.” Wrong: each part must reach the target. Your CLB drops because of writing.
“I focus on my writing to pass the 10/20.” Each part reaches its target: you get CLB 7 everywhere.
Example
Fatou gets 470 in Listening and 460 in Reading. She has 11/20 in Writing and 10/20 in Speaking. Each result reaches CLB 7. She has her target in all 4 parts!
Sami has 480 in Listening but only 8/20 in Writing. His reading is good, but his writing falls below CLB 7. He must mainly work on writing before taking the test again.
Key points

Quick test
Writing and Speaking are marked out of 20. It is Listening and Reading that give a score from 100 to 699.
The threshold for Listening at CLB 7 is 458+. So 470 reaches the target, but not 400, 350 or 300.
No: you must reach the threshold in each skill. A weak part lowers your CLB, even if another is excellent.
CLB 7 in all 4 parts + English CLB 5 or higher = 50 CRS points. With little or no English, French still earns 25 points: it is never wasted.
The minimum is CLB 5. Many files aim higher, at CLB 7, especially for TEER 0 and 1 jobs.
